623RD AIR CONTROL AND WARNING SQUADRON (AC&W)
YONTAN MT. & CAMP BISHIGAWA 1945-46
PG 1 OF 2
Photos from a WWII photo album of one of the officers assigned to the 623rd AC&W squadron. The 623rd started out as the 305th Fighter Control Squadron as part of the 8th Air Force on Okinawa. In June 1946 the 8th AF was reassigned to the US and the 305th was redesignated as the 623rd under the Far East Air Force. Some of the photos show the 305th sign but the notes in the photo album indicate the name changed to the 623rd. The 623rd was a radar unit and the equipment was located at Yontan (Yomitan) Mountain to the northeast of Yontan air field. The squadron's camp was located between Yontan air field and Kadena Circle at what was known as Camp Bishigawa (Bishagawa). Other units associated with the photos are 301st Fighter Wing and the 418th Night Fighter Squadron at Kadena Air Base.
